Borthwick Decorators has been applying Venetian plaster, polished plaster and decorative finishes across Glasgow as part of a full painting and decorating service since 1959. We typically work on West End sandstone townhouses, Victorian tenement flats, Southside villas and Glasgow city centre commercial interiors.
Venetian plastering is a transformation — a hard, polished, marble-effect finish that turns plain walls into an architectural focal feature. Applied properly, in thin layers and burnished by hand, it has a depth and tactile quality that no paint or wallpaper can match.
We have been applying decorative finishes across Glasgow since 1959 as part of a full painting and decorating service. Where the city’s Venetian plastering specialists are typically single-technique firms, Borthwick delivers polished plaster as one component of a coordinated project that handles surrounding decoration, joinery preparation, and the rest of the scheme — easier project management for clients who would otherwise be co-ordinating multiple trades themselves.
Venetian plaster is a wall finish of Italian origin, traditionally made from slaked lime and finely-ground marble dust. It is applied in thin layers with a steel trowel, then burnished to a high sheen that mimics polished stone. Variants include Marmorino (matte-to-sheen marble finish), Stucco Veneziano (high-gloss Italian formula), and modern polished plasters. The finish is durable, sealed against staining, and typically lasts decades in residential settings.
Glasgow’s architecture is a natural fit for polished plaster: West End sandstone townhouses with high ceilings and ornate cornicing; Victorian tenements in Hyndland and Kelvinside with original plaster detail; Southside villas in Newton Mearns, Giffnock and Bearsden; contemporary Merchant City conversions. Venetian plaster works against all of these as a focal feature wall or a full-room application.
We work across the city: West End, Hyndland, Kelvinside, Bearsden, Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Pollockshields, Shawlands, Merchant City and city centre commercial interiors.

Request a quoteMost of Glasgow’s Venetian plastering market is served by single-technique specialist firms. The Borthwick differentiator is that we are a full painting and decorating company that applies polished plaster as part of a coordinated project. That means substrate preparation, surrounding decoration, joinery work, and the rest of the project scope are handled by the same team — rather than the client co-ordinating multiple trades themselves.
For Glasgow’s commercial sector — hospitality, retail, office refurbishment — our CHAS, SMAS, SafeContractor, PDA and SDF accreditation makes us viable for sites where a sole-trader specialist cannot bid. That commercial scope, alongside 65 years of residential heritage work, is what separates Borthwick from single-technique firms.

Cost depends on surface area, finish type (Marmorino vs Stucco Veneziano vs polished plaster), substrate condition, and sheen level. We provide written quotes after a site visit — get in touch and we will arrange one within a working day.
Yes, provided the substrate is sound, level and properly prepared. Existing painted walls typically need a primer/key coat; uneven walls may need skimming first. We assess substrate condition during the consultation visit.
Standard plaster is a structural finish — it levels and prepares a wall for paint or wallpaper. Venetian plaster is a decorative finish in itself: applied in thin layers over a prepared substrate, then burnished to a polished marble-effect surface. The two work together.
Yes — commercial Venetian plastering is part of our regular Glasgow practice. We work on hotels, restaurants, retail and offices, programmed around operating hours where required. CHAS, SMAS and SafeContractor accredited.
A typical room-size project takes several days to two weeks depending on size, substrate preparation requirements, and the number of finish coats. We provide a project programme during the consultation visit.
