Haddington is the county town of East Lothian, one of Scotland’s best-preserved Georgian burghs — a planned grid of handsome streets around Court Street and the High Street, the medieval St Mary’s church by the Tyne, and a tight conservation core. Around it spread the farms and country houses of the fertile Lothian plain. Much of the town is listed or in a conservation area, and standards are high.
